In general I think this is a good idea and think it would be very useful for 1.1.    

I have a comment and a question regarding the possible interaction of this and the type mutability:
If we are going to support type mutability (and if we supported secondary types) it seems natural that type mutability would apply to secondary types as well as the primary types.   
Can you think of reasons why this might not be a good idea?
