I was thinking about a server-side procedure to emit a database table 
as genericode XML.  I understand it is possible to have such 
on-the-fly transformation.

But even without that, a virtual file system could be addressed by a 
URN instead of URL, so having the name be "URI" seems really appropriate to me.
