Subject: Update for the call today

Oxford / OASIS event:

  • The COEL specification seems to be something of rare beast as it describes a whole ecosystem.
  • Our IDA is an example of a pseudonymous key issuer (PKI) and very similar approaches are now being proposed for transient interactions of smart cars with the roadside.
  • Presenting the COEL ecosystem with Activinsights as an example made things easier – and people were impressed at the level of sophistication that was running in the field.

MyData conference:

  • I spoke in 2 of the 3 health events and ran a whole thread on 'operators'.
  • No other healthcare business had the confidence to talk about their data practices in this detail.
  • It is clearer to me now that our specification has a significant amount to say about governance – roles, responsibilities, rules etc.
  • In my MyData work, I am describing the generic role of the operators as 'an intermediary within an ecosystem with a duty of care to the individual'. I think we have a close mapping to this, although the specification could be more human-centric.
  • I can now see that the route to a more human-centric solution (individuals having direct access to health & wellness data in the Activinsights example) is reliant on the development of appropriate digital identity tools.

I have attached the slides that I used for both events. We have an open issue (COEL-195) to submit a paper to the International Journal of Population Data Science (IJPDS). I will now start to action this based on the presentation, feedback and learnings.
