Subject: Key Objectives For CMIS/DAM

Assuming this post works, I'm going to initiate the discussion about
CMIS/DAM by noting what I think are the key objectives:

1. It must be DAM-specific, but able to interoperate with the other CMIS
standards (e.g. the Artefact or Object models in CMIS).
2. The protocol needs to be very simple for DAM developers to implement in
their technology of choice - of the order of hours, not days or weeks (at
least the base level of compliance).
3. While simple, it also needs to be extensible so that more specialised
requirements can be added in around the core in a modular fashion based on
need.
4. The protocol should be compatible with asset registries and other
intellectual property exchanges like PLUS -
http://www.useplus.com/aboutplus/coalition.asp
5. Interoperability with some other existing well established standards,
like Dublin Core (DCMI) is essential, but whether this is achieved through
an extension or part of the core schema is up for discussion. I know there
are a few similar standards and I can foresee some mapping between CMIS and
each of them.

I know CMIS defines a lot of other methods for interacting with content
related data, but for the DAM-specific branch, I think we're going to need
to rationalise this as far as possible initially and keep it very simple.

I am currently in the process of reading up more about the CMIS protocol to
inform any contributions I might make (as I have limited pre-existing
knowledge of it), but if anyone who has more expertise with it than I do has
anything to add (especially how much is already covered elsewhere) I would
be very interested.

My understanding is that we're aiming towards trying to get a draft
specification written, so that is probably how we need to structure the
on-going discussion.

Thanks,

Ralph Windsor
