Subject: RE: [dita-adoption] Groups - OASIS DITA Adoption TC committee meetingmodified

I would also like to add my comments regarding the need to publish a series of whitepapers as a means to help DITA implementers at large to accelerate their adoption of DITA.  I believe that the Adoption TC presents a "vendor neutral" image to the industry and the whitepapers we produce will be valued more highly by the readers.  As such, I don't think we want to publish whitepapers in an "ad hoc" manner.  Rather, we should have an overall plan to roll out a series of essential whitepapers systematically, each with a specific objective and audience in mind.

I think that the minutes should reflect that the vote was a "strawman vote" rather than a ballot -- an informal opportunity to assess where members of the committee stand and what their concerns are. As such, we probably don't want the minutes to state that the "ballot passed."

I think it was a very productive meeting and look forward to the committee producing a whitepaper that will help people evaluate DITA and conduct pilot projects.

This is my last DITA Adoption Committee meeting as a representative of IBM; the next time we meet I will be an individual member of OASIS.

Best regards,

Kris

[dita-adoption] Groups - OASIS DITA Adoption TC committee meeting modified

Added meeting minutes.

-- Rodolfo Raya

OASIS DITA Adoption TC committee meeting has been modified by Rodolfo Raya

Date:  Wednesday, 22 April 2009
Time:  03:00pm - 04:00pm GMT

Event Description:
Call-in (sponsored by IBM) details:
Toll-free in USA: 888-294-8505
Direct-dial in USA: 213-270-2170
Participant Passcode: 71382177

Agenda:

Minutes:
Present: David Hollis, Gershon Joseph, JoAnn Hackos, Frank Miller, Kristen Eberlein, Drew Schumacher, Su-Laine Yeo, Deb Bissantz, Rodolfo Raya, Troy Klukewich, Robib Sloan, Mar Speyer, Joe Gelb and Scott Tsao.

Regrets: Briana Wherry, Mathew Varghese, Sowmya Kannan

JoAnn moved to approve previous minutes, Kristen seconded and none objected.

The wiki page for the fact sheet has been created. Action Item 10 closed.

Gershon reported that there are enough reviewers for the architectural specification. Action Item 3 closed.

Gershon commented that next release of the DITA Open Toolkit will have changes documented in files placed in the root folder. He also mentioned that the documentation for the new PDF plugin should also be placed in the /doc folder.

Some vendors oppose to promoting the Open Toolkit from within this committee. Gershon commented that the Open Toolkit exists to prove the DITA concept, demonstrating that the specification can be implemented. Tool vendors are free to include the Toolkit in their software, but it is not required. We may need to make sure that we are not over-promoting the Open Toolkit. It was acknowledged that the documentation of the Toolkit needs to be improved and thats an impediment for DITA adoption. As the Open Toolkit has been adopted by some vendors, improving the Toolkit may alter the balance between vendors.

A ballot was conducted. The question was Should we produce a white paper document that explains new DITA users how to produce the output they need?. The ballot passed with 12 votes in favor and 2 against.
There were concerns on the scope of the white paper to be produced.

Some members objected suggesting users to download the Open Toolkit and use it for producing output from DITA files.  JoAnn will prepare a tentative outline for the white paper. It will be discussed in future meetings.

JoAnn invited all members to contribute on the facts sheet page that we have on the wiki.

Meeting adjourned.
