Under Restrictions, the mentions to generalizing still make it
sound like the elements must (already) "be generalized to the 
same type" whereas they should instead "be generalizable to the 
same type".  If you don't like the word "generalizable", then
you could reword to say "should be the same element type (or a
specialization of that element type)...".

The first sentence of Example 3 is not complete.  It says that a
"range can include a variety of content, as long as the starting 
and ending elements share the same parent" which is not the full
story.  Instead, the sentence should say that a "range can include 
a variety of content, as long as the starting and ending elements 
share the same parent and are themselves both the same element type 
as (or a specialization of) that of the referencing element."
