Subject: Re: [dita-adoption] "Tools and DITA-Awareness" white paper published

Hi Kris,

The DITA TC folks are fine; I've already sent JoAnn the changes needed for White Papers. There will likely be one small footer change for Standards Track Work Products but for the time being DITA and DocBook processing will continue to be handled by the TCs using those environments. Once the dust settles and we have some on-the-ground experience with the changes I'll let the DITA and DocBook folks know what changes will be required (if any) as well as any changes with regard to processing. If either TC intends to start creating Non-Standards Track Work Products other than White Papers, there's a number of differences in the Note template, but again, this is a brand new process and I want to get the bugs worked out before sending you a list that is likely to change on a pretty frequent basis for at least the first month or two.

My goal is to make this as painless as possible for everyone involved.

Regards,

Mary

Hi, Mary.

Regarding the information in the detailed walkthrough:

“Working Drafts must use the template that will be prepared by TC Administration and returned to the TC.”

What is this template and where is it documented?

Sure; I also sent a note to all TC members (tcmembers@lists.oasis-open.org) last Thursday; if you didn't get it please let me know since it's one of those automated lists that's supposed to go to everyone who is a Member in a TC.

The new policy is here:

Hi, Mary.

Can you post a link to the new TC processes so all members can have the official link? Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Kris and Paul both bring up great points - and we've done just that. From now on any and all White Papers must be produced on the non-Standards Track. All approved work products will be maintained on docs.oasis-open.org. There will be a mandatory 30-day review before something can be considered final and approved as a Committee Note. OASIS Staff will update the TC's home page and Kavi document repository when the files are available on docs.oasis-open.org.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Regards,

Mary

Paul brings up a very good point.

We’ve talked previously about having a formal process for publishing white papers. Since publishing white papers has been the primary activity of the TC this past year. I think it would be smart to put an official policy in place.

Here is the URL for a previous list post about this:

Let’s put this on the agenda for a future TC meeting.

And I do apologize for publicizing this white paper too quickly.
Best regards,

We all have other jobs and real lives.  No one is suggesting that we put our OASIS TC work ahead of everything else.  I realize I spend a lot less time on DITA TC work than some others, and I very much appreciate the time that is put in by you who do.  (I spend more time on W3C work, and in the past I've spent much more on standards--I was the CTO for OASIS [née SGML Open] for its first 5 years driving its entire standards process.)

However, we should develop a better process here.  It's wrong for something to be announced publicly when it isn't listed on the TC's official home page.  It wasn't the email to the DITA Adoption TC saying the document was available that triggered my concern, but the email todita-users@yahoogroups.com that I feel shouldn't have been sent until we had everything properly listed on the TC's home page.

I'd like to suggest that, in the future, when we approve something for publication, we hold off announcing it until we have it entered properly in all the various places.

I thought I already said that I needed a few days to get to this. It’s there now. I have to put it on the TC Members page before it appears on the non-members page. One mirrors the other. You don’t post it at all on the non-members page.

The TC Members page can only be edited by Gershon, Rodolfo, and myself.

I actually have full-time responsibility at the company, I have grandchildren visiting this weekend, and I’m leaving for Shanghai on Monday. Sometimes I get busy.

The OASIS DITA Adoption Committee has published a new white paper about “Tools and DITA-Awareness.” The white paper is authored by Su-Laine Yeo, JustSystems Canada, and you can download it from http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/39829/Tools_and_DITA-Awareness.pdf
