Subject: RE: [dita-adoption] RE: Meeting Cancelled -- 22 October 2012

I second Bryan's sentiment. I would like to see continued work at DITA Adoption with a continued practical focus on deliverables.

This last year I have not been as involved as I would like due to personal reasons, but have maintained an understanding of adoption issues and continue to see numerous common (solvable) problems with real world implementations.

I know we've worked through the dissemination issues at OASIS itself, which took up a lot of time as OASIS was designed for disseminating specifications, not for disseminating useful information (oops, did I say that out loud?).

Perhaps at some point we can recap where we're at with relaying information to the public.

I might also suggest we collaborate on an Adoption book that pulls it all together and can go where it may, maybe as open source installments on dita.org. (Or we can work outside OASIS, sell the book to O'Reilly, make our millions, and retire from hi-tech altogether. Woo-hoo! Thank you DITA!)

I think we need to lay out exactly what the DITA implementation process really is, covering common scenarios, mistakes, and best practices. I'm thinking from out-of-the box, get an editor with processor, and use it, to high end custom implementation scenarios with dedicated XLST programmers. There is a huge gulf between these two extremes.

Eliot has done a great job explaining shells and I'm fanatical about not including domains and even elements from domains unless they are actually needed, remembering that DITA is a superset of loosely related domains. In practice, hardly anyone scales DITA properly while most everyone then complains about the subsequent complexity.

I'd be happy to work on a straw-person TOC if this is of interest to the TC.

Hi JoAnn,

Though I'm not as active as I'd like to be, I think the group's purpose is worthy, and the goals are still worth pursuing. I'd vote to keep going. And with my vote I also convey my intent to become more involved in 2012. FWIW.

Thanks,

Bryan

Hi,
Sorry to cancel the meeting. I'm still waiting to hear from every member about the future of the TC. I've only received 5 responses. 4 positive to continue.

Best,
JoAnn
