Thanks for the comment.

The same code example is used for <spares> (the container) and for <spare> (an individual list item). The example is correct for each. In this case, the linked topic is for <spare>, a single spare part; the example contains two <spare> elements:
  <spare>dipstick</spare>
 <spare>engine oil</spare>
