Subject: Re: [dita-comment] Clarify content model for DITA <example>

Hi Radu,

We discussed your question in todayâs TC meeting and we are all in agreement that the spirit of the specification is, as I think you expected, that <example>, like <section>, should have only one <title>. The <title> and its corresponding content then form a reusable chunk of information in the <example> element that can be easily used in another task, concept, or reference topic. If multiple examples and their corresponding titles were presented in one <example> element, reusability of only one of those examples would be somewhat more challenging.

As you point out, however, authors of <task> are limited to one <example> element in the strict task model of task. In situations where authors want to present more than one <example> in a single task topic, they should use the general task which allows any number of individual <example> elements between the <tasktroubleshooting> and <postreq> elements.

Thanks for your question and I apologize for the delay in our response.

Dawn

[dita-comment] Clarify content model for DITA <example>

We got a question here:

https://www.oxygenxml.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=19270&p=52296#p52296

For the DITA <section> a note in the specification says that it should have only one title but for <example> it does not state the same thing.
I know the DTDs cannot properly express such a constraint but what does the spirit of the specs state about this?
Also the end user didn't really want an example with several titles inside, they actually wanted to have two examples one after the other in a DITA task (probably after the <steps>) which is not allowed by the DTDs/schemas.

Regards,
Radu
