Subject: Groups - DITA Learning Content SC Working Meeting modified

DITA Learning Content SC Working Meeting has been modified by John Hunt

Date: Thursday, 15 March 2007
Time: 11:00am - 12:00pm ET

Event Description:
USA Toll Free Number: 866-880-0098
USA Toll Number: +1-210-795-1100
PASSCODE: 6396088

Agenda:
Working session to hear updates, discuss, and provide feedback on the Phase 2 topic type designs.

1) Announcement
Check out the information about the DITA-S1000D
Learning Content Summit, to be held April 10-11 at the ADL in Alexandria, VA. Wayne Gafford is organizing this event for the ADL. Please consider attending, if at all possible.

See - http://www.adlnet.gov/news/articles/400.cfm

2) For latest updates on plans and topic designs, see DITA learning SC wiki page here -

http://wiki.oasis-open.org/dita/LearningSubcommittee

a) Reuben Tozman and John Hunt had an initial discussion about the Learning Enhancement type, with notes here - http://wiki.oasis-open.org/dita/LearningContent/LearningEnhancementTopicType.

b) John Accardi and John H. discussed the Assessment type.

c) Amber Swope and Scott Hudson to join teams on design of the Overview and Summary types.

d) Greg DeVore is lead for the Learning Content type.

e) Wayne plans to discuss thoughts about the design for the Instructional Design type at today's March 15 Thursday meeting.

--------------------------------------------------
Goals for March - Form teams, collect content samples,
revise overviews, start identifying elements needed.

What does a topic-type team and lead do?
- Assembles a team and convenes meetings
- Collects sample content
- Reviews and revises the overview description for the topic
type
- Develops a table of the specialized DITA elements needed
to support the topic type
- Develops DITA content samples for the topic type
- Drafts the specification for the topic type

Minutes:
Wayne Gafford - has assembed team for designing the Instructional Design topic type
Will post names to the wiki.
Design goals for the ID type include enabling you to organically re-create.
The lesson planning process, including learning levels, prerequisites information, and so forth.
Capture steps needed to implement a course.
Model the lines of thinking that go into creating a course.
Greg DeVore - mentions sample of course he's developed for Siemens.
Integrated e-learning with on-site training.
Issue is how to integrate the lesson planning process into this.
John Accardi - asks about the role of a task analysis in the lesson plan.
Wayne - Task analysis comes before the lesson plan.
We need to broaden how we think of a task analysis.
For ex, for a K-12 lesson plan, it could be "the best way to prepare for a standardardized test on a certain subject.
Greg - what about localization?
Amber Swope - discussion of Overview and Summary types
Planning to merge design team for Overview and Summary types, with Scott Hudson.
Opens with question about the connection between Overview and Summary types.
What carries over between the two types?
Greg - Overview tells where you're going
Summary says where you've been
Summary often has more detail than the overview.
JA - this applies to objectives - more detail in the summary than the overview
AS - can we reuse directly from Overview to Summary?
WG - ID topic may have objectives, too.
A summary may in a sense "get written along the way."

Amber - how customizable do we have to get?
GD - example of a course where they give an assessment each day,
then create custom content for the next day, based on the assessment results.
With modular content, this is quite possible.
The key here is that everything needs to be modularized into a task or concept
This lets you re-shuffle content, and even create new modules quickly, even during an actual course.

My conclusions from this discussion
1) We need to identify potentially overlapping between the topic types, and consolidate if possible into a base learning type.
2) Some content structures may be the same between types, but the content itself may differ.
For example, the instructional design, overview, and summary types may all include , but the content for the objectives may not be the same.
Question: Can the same content structure for objectives work across these types?
There are probably other examples, such as and .
3) Can a task analysis be captured in a DITA map and then referenced from the instructional design?
4) We can start thinking about best practices for modular learning content and customization.
