Subject: Re: [dita-learningspec] L&T committee meetings and activities

We still need to meet periodically to cover any important issues, but on an as-needed basis. The current time slot works for me.

More work should be done via email or collaborative docs. I think that would make it much easier to come up with concrete proposals, but get the work done. The full TC process to create a proposal, discuss, then vote can be a bit cumbersome. I think collaborative authoring so we can get to a workable draft is a good idea.

In the past, we used the wiki as this collaborative workspace. I suggest that this method could still work for us and still remain in the OASIS guidelines.

Thanks and best regards,

Subject: [dita-learningspec] L&T committee meetings and activities

Hi all,

I hope this email finds you all well. I am certain it finds you all busy, which is largely what this email is about.

I’m writing to solicit ideas for what we can do to get our small group pointed in the right direction, despite our busy schedules, so that the L&T specialization doesn’t atrophy. As you know, we have had tremendous challenges in achieving any kind of quorum. I know that groups often take on the characteristics of their leaders and Amber and I miss as many meetings as we attend, and so we accept responsibility for the fact that we are not making progress. Nevertheless, even as one of us attends, we find that we get only one or two others on the call (today, for example, was Birgit and I only). Although we are a small group, my feeling is we need at least 4 or 5 people on a call to be effective.

So this email seeks to figure out what should we do:

1)      Give up. This is not meant to be cheeky. It’s an honest option. When Amber and I took the committee over, it was to prevent it from being shut down – so shutting down has been an option all along.

2)      Move the meetings/change the frequency of the meetings/change the length of the meetings. Is there a better day/time for everyone? We would do better with perhaps a longer meeting less often?

3)      Conduct more work through emails; perhaps if we posed specific questions or specific proposals that needed to be written through email, we could get more done. People could simply respond to the questions or crowd-write the proposal through email or google docs or something like that.

Other ideas?

It’s apparent we aren’t making progress toward an update the way we are going right now. What do you all suggest to get us back on track?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dawn
