Subject: Re: [dita-lightweight-dita] Specialization chapter in committee note

From our TC chair's outstanding work items:
I do think there's value in writing something about the specialization tool/process outside of the LwDITA spec. That's why I proposed a conference or journal instead of a second committee note. I agree, however, on the statement that our current work should go to the introductory committee note and then we can plan new deliverables.

Slow down on this. Building tooling for template-based specialization is one thing -- that's clearly not standards driven work -- but if LwDITA wants to have elements and attributes in LwDITA that will provide hooks for template-based specialization, that very much is standards activity.

In the interim, I'd also suggest (please, please) that writing time that you might have to spare be directed towards this committee note or the coding effort needed to make it happen. Here are some of the outstanding work items that I am aware of:

  • Constructing the multimedia specialization, both as a component of LwDITA and as a plug-in that DITA 1.3 users could use
  • Documenting the multimedia specialization in the draft committee note
  • Documenting the attributes used in LwDITA
    • Those in DITA 1.3
    • Those in multimedia specialization
    • Any added to support template-based specialization

I agree that the template-based specialization can be taken out of the LWDITA committee note we are working on. I'd be interested in helping with submitting a paper to STC. Is that the journal, Don? Or the STC Summit event?

I am sorry to have missed yesterday's meeting (calendar SNAFU). I agree with your assessment; template-based specialization should not be a linchpin of the proposal. Rather, I look on this activity as an investigation that, if proven practicable, can be later promoted (venue to be determined, maybe dita.xml.org by that time) as a best practice for adopters and implementers (insofar as it involves coding that is not "standardizable").

STC is soliciting papers at the moment. That could be another opportunity for publication with some potential face time for a SC member who can present, if it is accepted.

Dear all,

We had a call yesterday to review the draft of our LwDITA committee note. Looking at the proposed TOC (and actual content), it is clear that whereas the XDITA, HDITA, and MDITA sections are looking healthy and quite consistent, the section on the template-based specialization is underdeveloped.

Something to consider here: should we move the specialization section out of this first LwDITA committee note? Maybe we can keep working on it and present it in a different document. We can release it as an article for ACM SIGDOC or the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication (I can score some monies to make it open access and avoid journal paywalls).

I think the IEEE PCS journal would be interested if we present it as a case study (marketing specialization, anyone?)

Then, we can develop the sections on authoring formats (Elliot Kimber’s correct term for LwDITA’s “flavors”) and have this first committee note out ASAP.
