Subject: DITA Translation SC meeting minutes - 20 Feb 2006
Hi all, I've attached the minutes from our meeting last Monday. Best Regards, Gershon --- Gershon L Joseph Member, OASIS DITA and DocBook Technical Committees Director of Technology and Single Sourcing Tech-Tav Documentation Ltd. office: +972-8-974-1569 mobile: +972-57-314-1170 http://www.tech-tav.com
MEETING MINUTES -- 20 February 2006 -- DITA TRANSLATION SUBCOMMITTEE (Minutes taken by Gershon Joseph <gershon@tech-tav.com>) Date: Monday, 20 February 2006 Time: 08:00 - 09:00 PT DITA Translation Subcommittee resources: - Public Web site (working area outside of OASIS IP): to be announced - Mailing list: to be announced - Meeting chaired by Don, since JoAnn was unable to attend - Roll call -> Don, Gershon, Robert, Andrzej, Charles, Rudolpho, Sukumar, Christian (did I miss any?) Regrets -> JoAnn, Tony, another (I didn't catch the name) - Review/approve minutes from previous meeting: Last meeting's minutes were not sent out, so Don reviewed the issues and actions: - Review and approval of the work scope definition to be provided to the OASIS DITA TC for formal vote to initiate the Translation SC - An update on Brian Schnabel's work with an XLIFF in/out tool, with discussion about its fit with DITA. Don was to send some form of test case to Brian--Brian, if you'll remind me, I'll do so ASAP. - A short discussion on inline elements as defined by Robert Anderson and Chris Wong - Andrzej Zydron got started on his presentation about the relationship of translation standards to DITA. - Discuss and affirm a schedule of work products (completion by end of June 2006): - Don proposed: - Task 1: 1 month on review and rollup of recommended specification updates for DITA 1.1. It is most urgent for us to get this information to the DITA TC in ASAP, so they can include our feedback into the DITA 1.1 specification. - Task 2: 1 month on practices and conventions for writers, vendors (separate issues, perhaps?) - Task 3: 1 month on macro issues: XLIFF, segmentation, workflow, management of topics as assets, etc.., book to reusable topic paradigm issues that need to be addressed - Task 4: 1 month on shaping the big picture, writing and reviewing final report. Close the activity with final report rolling up the first 3 activities. DISCUSSION -- Don asked if this proposal is acceptable. Gershon suggested tasks 2 and 3 may be optimistic. Don suggested working on them in parallel. Rudolpho agreed and said that they could all start once the schema/DTD changes have been defined. Don summarizes Rudolpho's recommendation as combining macro issues and specification changes into one task. Don has discussion with Sukamar, who's concerned that writers and translators understand the new paradigm and will adopt it; what changes would be required to the vendor tools? Suggestion that there are 2 primary/key activities: - updates to DITA specification - best practices and workflows Andrzej - addressing the inline elements (segmentation) is the key aspect of the schema issues to be addressed. Define which elements should be treated as inline without any ambiguity; this would address the translatability of DITA as well as rules for specializing. Don - some elements may have localization issues, e.g. date and time, as well as some phrases, depending on semantics associated with them. - Don proposes revised proposal: - Task 1: 1 month on review and rollup of recommended specification updates for DITA 1.1. - Task 2: 2 months on best practices and conventions for writers, vendors (separate issues, perhaps?) and macro issues: XLIFF, segmentation, workflow, management of topics as assets, etc.., book to reusable topic paradigm issues that need to be addressed - Task 3: 1 month on shaping the big picture, writing and reviewing final report. Close the activity with final report rolling up the first 3 activities. PROPOSAL -- Don proposes to accept the revised schedule and work scope. Charles seconds. No objections, approved by acclamation. - Don acknowledges email thread between Andrzej and Yves and asks for comments. Andrzej -- Yves made some very useful comments that Andrzej addressed by email; the slides were modified as a result of Yves's comments and sent to the SC. - Resume Andrzej's presentation, using the new slides (Updated Localization Industry Standards). Q and A after Andrzej completed his presentation: Rudolpho -- Is DITA converted to XML-TM as an export of DITA document? Andrzej -- No, the xml-tm is in the DITA document. Don -- XLIFF is a process management format that handles the workflow for the translation process. Don asked Andrzej to change the circular diagram (page 15 of Andrzej's slide show) with a diagram that better illustrates the flow from authored document to translation. Don suggests Andrzej uses Don/Charles diagram they use within IBM as a basis for the new diagram. Don -- some of the standards are very applicable to DITA markup, the exchange standards fit into workflow and processing methodology. Rudolpho -- XLIFF is waiting for ITS before making the XML standard, so ITS will also need to be applied to DITA once it's ready. Andrzej described the kind of vendor-specific XML markup to indicate inline-ness and translatability, which will be addressed by ITS. Rudolpho -- ITS is the first standard that specifies how to create markup for translation. - goals for next week (Don): 1. Continue refining the typical workflow for DITA content 2. Do we need to discuss packaging of content for how material enters the translation workflow? Christian -- questions related to packaging are of interest to people working on the process. e.g. do we only ship source material and source language or also rendered versions of docs so the translators can see the source language in rendered format? Rudolpho -- it's important for translators to see context. Don -- let's discuss further on the email list and this will give us a focused agenda for next week. Address your questions to Andrzej directly via this mailing list. - Meeting adjourned. The following agenda items will be rolled into next meeting: Time permitting, begin focused discussion on what to recommend most immediately for TC focus for DITA 1.1 I'd like to welcome Robert Anderson and Nancy Harrison as OASIS representatives to the Subcommittee. Robert has extensive practical expertise with DITA's features for globalization, and Nancy leads globalization activities for IBM's Rational brand and is also a member of the DocBook TC.
