Subject: Fw: [members] Public Review of OASIS Open Document Format for OfficeApplications (OpenDocument) 1.0
- From: Don Day <dond@us.ibm.com>

DITA TC members and supporters,
You may have seen this announcement already, but I want to call it especially to your attention. Besides DocBook and WordML, the Open Document Format is one of the major industry standards (de facto or formal) that DITA users might be familiar with. Some of your writers might already be asking whether they can use the OpenOffice document editor with DITA. Also, the Telematics between Administrations Committee (TAC) activity--among other proponents of open standards in Europe--is watching both DITA and the Open Office space for application. So please give this request whatever time you can, outside of your careful attention to the DITA spec itself, naturally ;-)
Regards,

To OASIS Members, Announce Lists
The OASIS Open Office XML Format TC has recently approved the OASIS Open
Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) 1.0 specification
as a Committee Draft and in its last meeting has approved it for public
review. The public review starts today, 4 January 2005 and ends
3 February 2005.
Public review from potential users, developers and stakeholders is an
important part of the OASIS process to assure interoperability and
quality. Comments are solicited from all interested parties. Comments
may be submitted to the TC by any person via a web form found on the
TC's web page at http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/office. Click
the button for "Send A Comment" at the top of the page.
Submitted comments (for this work as well as other works of that TC)
Are publicly archived and can be viewed at
http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/office-comment/.
Below is a short description of the specification and a list of files.
Description
-----------
The OpenDocument specification defines an XML schema for office applications
and its semantics. The schema is suitable for office documents, including
text documents, spreadsheets, charts and graphical documents like drawings
or presentations, but is not restricted to these kinds of documents. The
schema provides high-level information suitable for editing documents. It
defines suitable XML structures for office documents and is friendly to
transformations using XSLT or similar XML-based tools.
Files
-----
The file are available here:
1. The Committee Draft specification is available in OpenOffice.org XML file
format and in PDF format. The committee draft contains three embedded
Relax-NG schemas.
a) the schema for office documents (specified in chapters 1 to 16),
b) the normative schema for the manifest file used by OpenDocument
package format (specified in chapter 17), and
c) the strict schema for office documents that permits only meta
information and formatting properties contained in this
specification itself (specified in appendix A).
The OpenOffice.org XML version of the specification is located at:
