Hi JoAnn,

If I may, would your question be adequately served by a collection-wide specification of language and locale? Then the processing could use a sort order that is locale-specific, subject to overrides within the explicit sort-order directives on individual instances.

If there are individual locales that use multiple sort orders, then we'd need standard names for the alternate sort orders, or at least a place to enter a name for a sort order that the processing could pick up and act upon.

The same setting could also determing glossary alphabetization.

How would this proposal allow me to place the words beginning with the
letter "a" at the end of the sort? The result would be b ... z a

Of course, this is a fictional example but it would enable users to
correct for the sort order in various languages that is different from a
standard sort.
