Subject: Re: [dita] Naming the big edition

I don't know about a chart, but that is exactly the sort of info that we want to have on the "master" Web page.

Kris

Would OASIS allow us to include a simple chart that contains this sort of advice?

But let's remember that we DON'T want most people to download the "big" edition. The only people who should get the "big" package are implementers, practitioners, and end users of learning & training.

Everyone else should use the smallest package that suites their needs.

<Not-serious>

Maybe we should call the edition "big" or "over-sized".

Hmm ... Maybe we should name the editions as "small," "medium," and "large"?

My preference WAS "comprehensive", but having checked dictionary.com, I can go with "all-inclusive":

comprehensive
adjective
1. of large scope; covering or involving much; inclusive: a comprehensive study of world affairs.
2. comprehending or thoroughly understanding with one's mind; having an extensive mental range or grasp, as of a particular subject or many subjects.
3. Insurance. covering or providing broad protection against loss.

all-inclusive
adjective
1. including everything; comprehensive.

I'm good with 1 and 2. I'll go with 'all-inclusive' for #3 in hopes of helping to tip things cleanly in a direction.

Hi everyone,

It is time to make a final decision regarding what to call the edition of DITA 1.3 that will contain everything. As a reminder, we are aiming to produce three "editions" that are proper subsets of each other:

1. Base -- map and topic

2. Technical Content -- Base plus all the tech comm stuff

3. ___?___ -- Technical Content plus Learning & Training

If you care about this naming issue, speak up now for your favourite among the following names that have been suggested and/or casually used to date (sans kitchen sink references because we're being all serious now):

- All-inclusive

- Complete

- Comprehensive

- Full

- Omnibus

(If there was another suggestion that I missed, please drop it into the mix.)

Failure to vote will be construed as implicit support for what Nancy and I have both agreed is our own favourite: "All-inclusive". I.e., if nobody says anything, we're going to go ahead and keep the one that we are already using as a placeholder in our draft docs!
