3. Announcements
- Tammy & Kathryn leaving TC, as Precision Content not renewing its OASIS membership
- Tammy; we have bookmap elements, both structure and metadata, ready for review.
- Frank; SAP is being taken private by Silverlake equity firm; it looks to be an interesting ride over next few months...

4. Report back from ConVEX
[attendees from TC: Frank, Robert, Scott, Eliot, Keith; Frank and Keith virtual]
- Eliot; the hotel lost AC, veso it was variably very hot. But it was cool getting to meet folks from Europe I hadn't seen since 2019.
- Kris; I was sorry to miss it with Covid.
- Eliot; topic of the day was AI and ChatGPT; Mike Iantosca had some really interesting things to say, e.g., when you're using ChatGPT, you train it on your content, but you can't untrain it, because it's inherently unknowable in how it makes it decision
- Robert; check out the term 'vectorized linguistic nepotism'; coined by Mike Iantosca (now at Avelara, as is MichaelP).
- Kris; Mike is doing a monthly 'semantic knowledge' guild; monthly preentations. And Mike regularly is in interesting LinkedIn conversations.
- Scott; taxoxnomy and ontologies also came up; those were popular concepts years ago, now they're coming back.
- Kris; in a DITA-based, or a more general knowledge-based way?
- Scott; isssues is the importance of connecting content with taxonomy.
- Eliot; basically, generative AI, if not guided by taxonomy, will give you gibbersish answers; with taxonomy, it can be very powerful, but no one's been able to do that yet. But folks with library science degrees are becoming rock stars.
- Kris; Mayo Clinic is ahead of curve here, we have a large team of ontologists; i work with mgr of ontologists, who has 7 under him. I'm still learning about it, not using it yet in DITA. At Mayo, it's stored in TopBraid, which intersects with various CMSs. For example, it handles which doctors are in what depts, what clinical trials are doing what, how they intesect, etc.
- Tammy; we haven't done that, we're only using DITA for taxonomy/ontology.
- Kris; it's early in Mayo's transition to DITA; we're looking at 'how do we annotate individual topics rather than DITA maps?'; 'how do we annotate stuff that was in different product lines?'; 'how do we reconcile different taxonomies/ontologies?'.
- Frank; maybe a next presentation for ConVEx from you could be on ontologies and DITA?
- Kris; if I ever get a real handle on it...
- Eliot; Jan Graat did a presentation on doing real automatic generation of DITA using generative AI; similar to what George Bina did last year. Jan is using PHP to generate fragments; it's simple and cheap but it works. Wrt the conference, it seemed like the set of vendors was the same as usual, except that Adobe wasn't there.
- Kris; they had a big event in March in Las Vegas.
- Eliot; ours is such a small conference that it may not be worth their while to staff a booth.
- Kris; Stefan contacted me about DITA World, that Adobe runs, but last time they put us on the last time slot on the last day, when everyone's left.
- Robert; my general health sucked during the conference, I crashed Tues night, my experience of it was that it was mainly AI discussions.
- Scott; Eliot and I had 3 presentations between us, we shared some stuff we've been doing with XQuery and our content.
- Frank; I saw 2 of them and really liked them.
- Eliot; our 3rd talk, we were unfortunately scheduled against Mike Iantosca, who was presenting on something I would have liked to see. .
- Kris; maybe you can reprise some of those preentations with user groups.
- Eliot, Scott; we'd be glad to that.
- Zoe; talk to Stan about doing a presentation for the Boston DITA users group.
- Kris; I also want to plug the Boston group, I've been thinking about running a monthly dita-users seminar. anything else about ConVEx?
- Eliot; there will not be a DITA Europe this year, but there might be something in the spring. we also lobbied for Syncrosoft to have their DITA User's Day in Rumania.
- Keith; was Ixiasoft there, either as themselves or as Flare (the folks who bought them out)?
- Robert; they were there, with an Ixiasoft sign, but they had a Madcap logo at booth as well.
- Zoe; at the last Boston user group mtg, an Ixiasoft guy was there and talked about the merger, but not for publication; you could ask Stan about what her said.
