Alas, I spoke too soon.  The PDF image quality looks OK when viewed
with ImageMagick, but still isn't making it into the PDF document
at the proper quality.

Any more ideas will be appreciated.  (and thanks Bob, I'll look at your
tech notes, just got that message after writing this.)
