On UNIX, for specifying character encodings it's

  <language>_<locale>.<encoding>

which is very similar.

  bash-2.05$ set | grep LANG
  LANG=ja_JP.EUC

Is there such a specification for variations?  
Or are you defining it here?  ;-)
