I found out that a better workaround is to insert "\hspace{0pt}" after the "'" character when used as an apostrophe, that is when it has one letter on the left and either another letter or a TeX command (\) on the right. It gives (on a sh-compatible command-line): perl -pi -e "s%([a-zA-Z])'([a-zA-Z\\\\])%\$1'\\\\hspace{0pt}\$2%g" $jadetexfile But that's still a hack. In some cases, the line gets broken after the apostrophe character, which violates the typographical rules. I'd still appreciate a more accurate solution.
