I guess the invisible characters in Word will be your ISO characters. It may be that the font Word is using doesn't support those characters. With Word 2000 onwards, Microsoft provide a special set of ISO compatible fonts for use in multi-language environments. The files for these fonts are huge and most people don't need the extra stuff so MS keep them seperate. I seem to remember they're available as an option during installation.
