Thanks to all of you who recommended TexLive.....it is so much faster! On a desktop machine that is 400Mhz vs a laptop at 700Mhz the tex file is about 3.2Mb (I misspoke earlier about the file size) and the slower machine was faster using TexLive!
The only catch I have now is to figure out why openjade doesn't want to use my custom dsssl stylesheet....it doesn't seem to like public entities, only local (SYSTEM) ones. Anyone out there have any ideas?

Try to use TeXLive distribution under Windows. It is very easy to setup
and intial settings work without any problems with JadeTeX and
pdfJadeTeX. I also didn't encounter any performance problems with it.
