OK, if it's a single one-way transition with hand editing
afterwards, that's possible.  In fact, I did this using
OpenOffice 1.1 and it's DocBook/XML export feature.  The
exported files were not even valid XML, but with the help
of Emacs+psgml and Emacs+nxml it was possible.  This task
has to be done by hackers!

This is easy!  You don't need to change the GUI of XXE or
anything.  Just create your own DTD derived from
DocBook/XML and use this subset with XXE.  As long as it
is a subset, not a superset, this should just work.
