Just a word of caution about using an SGML book to write XML DTDs, as there are some differences. It would be fine for DTD design, but not for a syntax reference. I would also suggest "XML in a Nutshell" by Elliotte Rusty Harold and W. Scott Means. It has a nice concise intro to XML DTDs, as well as other useful XML info.
