It works for me using xsltproc, the 1.68.1 stylesheets, and FOP 0.20.5. Did you change the 'dingbat.font.family' to something else? That is what is used for such symbols. You might need to customize the name="dingbat" template in fo/fo.xsl to handle special symbols that reside in more than one font. FOP doesn't handle multiple fonts in one font-family specification.
