Sorry---I had not read far back enough in XMLMind's mailing list (or
deep enough into the XFC manual).  It looks like this is a limitation
of XFC---margin values can't contain calculations.  I'm using some
significant customisations for the page masters which have a lot of
calculated values.  Using the stylesheets that ship with XFC gives the
expected result.
