That worked like a charm, thanks so much. I think another mistake in my 
example was that the current.docid and targetdoc don't match, but you 
zeroed in on the critical problem.

Believe it or not, I've read the olink chapter many times - esp. the 
annnotated sitemap, but somehow couldn't connect all the dots I needed to.
