Actually, it worked for me.  When I turned off tablecolumns.extension, FOP 
0.20.5 was able to produce a table with proportional column widths.  Can 
you post a short sample document that illustrates the problem?

Nope. No good either. Why can't FOP just impliment this like XEP. :-)
