Dave,
I've had good results with W3M, one of the three methods in Bob's book.
 
w3m -cols 70 -dump -T text/html -no-graph "$MASTER_DOC".html > text/$MASTER_DOC.txt
 
 
I also chose W3M because it was native on my Linux box ;-) So W3M is  not a good solution for windows.
