Hi Sanjaya,It's nice to see that you are interested in DocBook.
As a start to DocBook, you may refer the following two great books "DocBook: The Definitive Guide" and "DocBook XSL: The Complete Guide" [1] [2]. The first book covers the DocBook schema and is a good reference book. The second book covers almost all the things you need to know about DocBook XSL styling. I think you will need these two books a lot for this project! :)
Further, I hope you went through this year's GSoC ideas list and the last year's ideas list? [3] [4] Some of the last year's ideas were already implemented (4 successful project IIRC!), and I'm not sure whether those ideas will be eligible for this year. Probably they will!
Regards,

Hi dev,
I'm Sanjaya Liyanage and a final year undergraduate
student of faculty of Computer Science & Engineering,University of
Moratuwa,Sri Lanka.I would like to hold the "Cascading Stylesheet for
DocBook XML" project as my this year gsoc project. These days I'm
getting familiarised on DocBook and CSS.I will be pleased if anyone can
share anything regards this idea as I don't have a clear idea on what
are the expectations of this idea and what are the goals I must achieve.
Thank you very much,
