Yes, it does make a difference?
I'm on Linux, but using emacs a new file comes up in DOS ...
mode/encoding?
C-x RET f unix changes the file to a Linux file....
and the & # x D ;  disappear and the programlisting 
is nicely displayed!

How to persuade emacs to generate unix encoding for new files anyone?
