Your workaround has no affect.
Using the following markup:
    <authorgroup>
      <author>
        <firstname>Adam</firstname>
        <surname>Adams</surname>
      </author>
   
      <collab>
        <collabname>Jenny Jones</collabname>       
      </collab>
    
    </authorgroup>

Only the author element is present in the FO output.
