You might add your voice to RenderX to fix this long standing problem.  This was 
reported to RenderX in 2005 and their response was "This is a limitation of XEP and it 
isn't likely to change in the nearest time."  Well, it is no longer the "nearest 
time", so it is time this problem was fixed.  It makes XEP unusable for multi-column 
layouts with spans.
