This seems to work for us (I think ;) ):

<xsl:attribute-set name="list.block.properties">
  <xsl:attribute name="provisional-label-separation">
    <!-- Insert distance between bullet/number and content -->
  </xsl:attribute>
  <xsl:attribute name="provisional-distance-between-starts">
    <!-- Insert distance between margin and content -->
  </xsl:attribute>
</xsl:attribute-set>


The FO parameter reference (see section 2.21) is a great resource here,
as it contains a listings specifying which attributes any attribute set
contains by default (which should give you some hints):
