Subject: FYI - Article about OASIS IPR controversy
ZDNet has a good article about the controversy that has arisen around the OASIS Intellectual Property Rights Policy[1]. [1] http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-5585711.html?tag=nl.e589 Lest you are inclined to write this off as just a kneejerk reaction from some gang of extremist rabble rousers, note that Lawrence Lessig and Tim O'Reilly were among the people who signed the "A Call to Action in OASIS"[2] broadside mentioned in the article. [2] http://perens.com/Articles/OASIS.html I realize this does not directly affect the DocBook TC, since we have no plans to adopt RAND-mode licensing. But it troubles me quite a bit to be financially supporting an organization whose leadership has chosen (over that objections of many of its own members) to adopt an IPR policy that gives anyone the option to potentially collect royalties from implementors of a standard whose development they participated in. --Mike
