Overall, it looks good.  I particularly like the description of 
specialization
with the example.  I think it will work just fine as is.  A couple of 
thoughts
if you still have any time (by my clock it's already afternoon on the east
coast:):

- This doesn't state that you've already implemented these 4 ideas, at
   least in prototype form.  That might be a useful addition.
- I suspect you don't have room, but it would be really nice to have a
  bit of code to show the cross-reference and conref markup.  I wonder
  if just having <link xlink:href="#topic1/usefulnote">this note</link>
  for cross-reference and <note conref="#topic1/usefulnote"/> for
  conref would fit and add a little more meat to those two points.
- From the "hasn't he got something better to do than copy-edit?"
  department, you have periods after the first and second headings,
  but not the third and fourth.
