As in choose either the abbreviation or the full word?
Yes... once explained :-)

It's clean, simple.
   <abbrev>
  <abbrev>LASER</abbrev>
   <expand>Light Amplification ...</expand>
  </abbrev>

Mmm. Perhaps choice is better.
  Any improvement on choice?
