Subject: ANSI guidance on hazard statements / admonitions

All, per my action item, here is what I’ve found:

There are four Signal Words or Hazard Classifications used in the design of an ANSI Z535.4 2007-compliant hazard statement: “DANGER”, “WARNING”, “CAUTION” or “NOTICE”

When designing a hazard statement, determine the likelihood and severity of a potential injury if a person does not follow the instructions.

When more than one hazard exists on a product using more than one label is permissible, provided the information addresses each hazard and the signal word selected is based on the greatest level of hazard. The hazard symbol is used to visually warn of a potential personal injury hazard. This symbol is used in conjunction with the signal word as part of a hazard statement.

Danger

Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, results in death or serious injury. Safety Signs identified by the signal word DANGER are used sparingly and only for those situations presenting the most serious hazards. The heading typically renders with a white triangle with a red exclamation mark and white signal text on a red background.

Warning

Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, results in death or serious injury. Hazards identified by the signal word WARNING present a lesser risk of injury or death than those identified by the signal word DANGER. The heading typically renders with a black triangle with orange exclamation mark and black signal text on an orange background.

Caution

Indicates a hazardous situation, which if not avoided, can result in minor or moderate injury. It can also be used as an alternative to “NOTICE”. The heading typically renders with a black triangle with yellow exclamation mark and black signal text on a yellow background.

Notice

Notice is the preferred signal word to address practices not related to personal injury. The heading typically renders without the safety alert symbol and with white signal text on a blue background.

Thanks and best regards,
