Joachim,

As far as using WP9 (in theory) for XML or SGML, you have all of WP's
graphic support features. You can use ANY graphic format supported by WP,
regardless of what your DTD says. There is a list supported graphic formats
somewhere in the WP online help. If you are authoring and publishing ONLY
with WP, this is fine. However, if you are using other SGML or XML tools
too, then you will run into problems if you use graphic formats that are not
also supported by your other tools.

If you are only using WP, then you can modify dbnotnx.mod. However, you will
have to modify it every time you upgrade to a new version of DocBook.

One thing is still not clear to me--is WP crashing over the notations, or is
it just generating a warning message? The correct thing for it to do is just
generate a warning message, so that you know that your notation declarations
are being ignored.
