Subject: Re: DOCBOOK: Re: external programlistings
/ Dave Makower <davemak@iclick.com> was heard to say: | Is what I am doing -- including a source code listing from a separate | file -- so anathema to structured document authoring that years | should go by with the only solutions being (a) a hack and (b) an | external tool? Why was such functionality eschewed from | XML/XSL/DocBook? | | (These are not meant to be rhetorical or facetious questions. I'm a | software developer, not a trained technical writer or structured | documentation expert, and I seek to gain a better understanding of | the school of thought that produced these technologies.) IMHO only: - It doesn't belong in XML, it's an application issue - It belongs in XSL, but it didn't make it into 1.0. - We've always been hesitant to add it to DocBook because it appears that XLink would provide the same functionality. With respect to my comment that <inlinegraphic format="linespecific"> is a hack, over time I've decided that my comment was a bit flip. Be seeing you, norm -- Norman Walsh <ndw@nwalsh.com> | The wonder is, not that the fields http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/ | of stars is so vast, but that man Chair, DocBook Technical Committee | has measured it.--Anatole France
