The DSSSL and XSL stylesheets both support the "hack" of an
image reference (inlinegraphic, imagedata) with a format of
'linespecific'.

For XSL, you have to run a translusion script over the result.

In the long run, we might expect the XInclude[1] or XLink[2]
specs to provide a more standard answer.
