Why not use xsltproc to generate xhtml chunked, the output is much better,
e.g

xsltproc     file:///path/to/docbook-xsl/xhtml/chunk.xsl       in.xml

This will produce a set of html files that are named sensibly such as:

index.html

ar01s02.html

and

ar01s03.html
