And yes, may be something like 'role' would be good enough, but as you state, it's not even preserved in all cases. And then, I was hoping to get some stylesheet support for automatically generating indexes for specific kinds of these elements. > I guess I'm not clear why role with suitable customization > doesn't meet this need. yes, it appears customization is the way to go, though I can't find much documentation about how the current stylesheet layout supports this.
