Profiling and tables

I've been experimenting with profiling in the last couple of days, and
having pretty good success.  However, we would really like to be able to use
profiling to pick rows and columns from a table, and I've found that the
<colspec/> element does not include the "Common Attributes".  This and
<spanspec/> are the only table-related element that does not include these
attributes.  Is there any particular reason for columns not to be
profilable?
