I also want to markup inline code (assuming the above is indeed inline 
code, eg something which has one line and fits in the flow of the 
surrounding text).

Something analog to
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml2/mod-inline-text.html#edef_inline-text_code
might make sense.

In a previous post Norm wrote
"[...] a <code> element is clearly in scope for DocBook."

I might file an RFE.
