Tobias's point was that the DocBook XSL fo stylesheet preserves line breaks and white space in the screen element (as well as programlisting and synopsis). It also sets it in a monospace font. In what way is the formating horrible? Perhaps adjusting the monospace.verbatim.properties attribute-set could correct the problems.
