Subject: Re: [docbook] Re: About translating the Guide...

Luca, are you translating the guide from an electronic source? Are you using a computer-aided translation (CAT) system or translation memory (TM) tool?

If you use CAT/TM and work with an electronic source, the work you do on the current guide can be carried over automatically when the new guide is released (a process called "leveraging"). Similarly, any work you do on a pre-release version of the new guide will carry over to the final version. Using translation memory, you can drastically reduce the turnaround time caused by revisions. Nearly all of the current TM tools support XML out of the box, and the industry-standard Translation Memory Exchange (TMX) format is itself an implementation of XML. Unfortunately, the most commonly used tools (TRADOS, SDLX, Deja Vu, Transit, etc.) are packaged commercial software, and not open source -- therefore rather expensive.

I'm fairly new to DocBook (and thus this list), so I apologize if this is something that's been addressed before.
