How about the following (a compressed edit of the introduction):

The Directory Services Markup Language v1.0 (DSMLv1) provides a means
for representing directory information as an XML document.  DSMLv2
further extends the reach of directories by providing a method for
expressing directory queries and updates (and the results of these
operations) as XML documents.
