Subject: ebBP 5/30/2005: BPMI Think Tank Update Summary

Here is a very brief summary of the think tank meeting in addition to
the discussion on Tuesday's call 24 May 2005. As we discussed, this is
cc: to John Casillas and Ed Dodds as perhaps the IHE POC may wish to use
ebBP and BPMN to model their business scenario.

BPMI brief think tank summary:
BPMI Think Tank: Joint WfMC/BPMI Meeting 17-19 May 2005 at On Demand
Conference in Philadelphia, PA
About 25 people present including representatives from Asia governments,
NEC, Fujitsu, Siemens (health care) and IBM (White via phone).

Short overview:

    * Key focus was organizational merger of WfMC and BPMI: May result
      in changes to BPMN.
    * Combined XPDL [XML Process Definition Language] and BPMN
metamodel: Work is moving very quickly because of anticipated merger.
    * Addition of choreography and collaboration support to BPMN
o Collaboration Activity (or whatever it is called) will be
added to BPMN v1.x (TBD). It accommodates the compositional
nature of activities or process. Some questions have arisen
about the relationship with the internal process, and
whether this global collaborative process has pools, etc.
Message Flow is consistent in/out of this activity/process
and represents the shared view of the parties.

See reference to questions about BPMN and ebBP between Stephen White and
Monica J. Martin:

XPDL-BPMN Combined Metamodel

    * XPDL has been extended (particularly at package and process
levels) to include elements found in BPMN.
    * XPDL provides an XML file format that can be used to interchange
process models between tools. BPMN provides a graphical notation
to facilitate human communication between business users and
technical users, of complex business processes.
    * Discussions continue on whether XPDL could be used as the
serialization (persistent file) format for BPMN. XPDL working
v2.0 draft integrates or coheres BPMN constructs with XPDL.
